Farmstay in Germany

Germany is a fantastic country to visit if you are looking for a rural stay in a farmhouse or some similar accommodation. Divided into 16 states or “Bundesländer” each with their own distinctive identity and landscape, Germany is ideal for those who like to explore the outdoors.

Explore the forests of Germany - Fairytale woodlands for the imagination

The Black Forest  is one of Germany’s most iconic regions. So-called because of the density of the woods which makes them virtually impenetrable in parts, the Black Forest is a mysterious place , often filled with the sounds of cuckoos. Serving as the inspiration behind many of the most well-known fairytales from the Brothers Grimm, this fairytale forest will capture your imagination just as it has for centuries. Known for the making of Cuckoo clocks since the 17th century alongside Black Forest Gateaux and idyllic villages, the Black Forest region is one of Germany’s well-loved regions, maintaining a classic regional identity. Be sure to visit Freiburg and try some of the region’s wine during your stay as well, as the gorgeous reds of the region are a treat for wine connoisseurs.

The North Sea region which includes Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, is a popular region for Farmstays and offers plenty of countryside for you to explore on foot or bike. East Friesland offers a number of islands that vary in size and environment. Borkum is 30 kilometre’s from the mainland. Known for its natural beauty and wellness breaks with spa treatments that take advantage of the clean water and air, Borkum is a great destination or day trip if you are in need of some relaxation. Lower Saxony is an interesting region due to its association with important figures as diverse as the British Royal Family and Luther. Visit the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen for a glimpse into the majesty of the House of Hannover.

The Thüringian Forest covers 450 kilometres and alongside the Black Forest, is Germany’s greenest area. Particularly suited for those who enjoy hiking, the Thuringian Forest is filled with lakes, great views from hilltops and guided paths themed to the routes of famous figures who frequented the forest, such as Goethe. There is a high density of UNESCO recognized sights in the area, varying from the natural wonders, to historical buildings. Visit Wartburg Castle to see where Martin Luther wrote some of his most important works which influenced the Reformation. Weimar is a small city with a long history of culture and scholarly enterprise, having been the residence of many of Germany’s great creative minds at one point or another, from Goethe, Nietzsche and Bach and Liszt.

Stay in the rural South and discover Baden Würtemberg, Germany's sunniest region

Baden Württemberg to the South links the Black Forest to the South of Germany and is a wonderfully diverse region. If you are looking to stay in a rural farmstay, Baden Württemberg offers a great location for day trips and the opportunity to discover the Black Forest or Lake Constance to the south. One of the main attractions of the area is the abundance of small towns with beautiful old architecture and local specialities. Visit Ulm to see the tallest cathedral in the world or Tübingen and other residences of princes to get a feel for Germany’s past as a land of states ruled by their own families. Heidelberg is just as important as a historical centre of academics and culture, surrounded by perfect countryside too. Saxony holds a similar mixture of culture and outdoors, from the capital of Dresden, to Leipzig, an old city of trade. A cottage in the countryside of Germany is the best way to experience everything that this country has to offer.
