The port was established in 1607 with the main purpose of providing a place for fishing and has changed over time due to various circumstances. Through over fishing and increasing competition the port transformed itself into more of a commercial port and where boats can be rented. Within the town there is the oldest building in the town - the Stonehaven Tolbooth. As the former warehouse of Dunnotta Castle, as a prison and as a shop for the local fisherman it was regarded as very important. Today it serves as a museum for the town and tells stories about its own history as well as the town itself. The town museum lies only a few minutes away from any holiday home in Stonehaven.
