The Forest of Dean is an ancient forest covering 42.5 square miles and is a great area to explore and do some walking. Take time to visit Puzzlewood, an attraction featuring narrow passes through rocks in the middle of dense forests, the consequence of open mining in the area. You can really get a sense of how the forest may have felt thousands of years ago. The tradition of “Free Mining” which was granted to anyone who was born in the boundaries of the Forest of Dean and had worked underground for exactly a year and a day! One such mine where hopefuls could prove themselves was the Clearwell Caves, that you can visit to gain a sense of what live in the Cotswolds mining community was like.
Visit Worcester, another nearby Cathedral city which holds the remains of King John and Prince Arthur. The famous Tudor House Museum in the city centre displays a mixture of items and exhibits from different periods and Worcester Guildhall is a stunning building which used to be the principal court for the area. If you have a car, Wales is also under an hour away as well as Bristol, making for easy trips to other cities and towns!
