The first marvellous view of Lake Geneva can be enjoyed on the train coming from Bern after the Puidoux tunnel. You look directly across the lake to the Grammont mountain on the French side. About halfway across the lake is the Olympic city of Lausanne. The promenade along the shore is very romantic. You can get very good cocktails at the Lacustre bar on the jetty. At the other end of the lake is Geneva. The lakeside area is certainly impressive, but Geneva is actually not much different from any other noisy French city. A trip to the romantic e.V. Restaurant tip: Bistrot Le120. Of course, a boat trip on Lake Geneva is also a must. My travel tip: in March and September, SBB sells day tickets for public transport throughout Switzerland, including boat trips (49 Fr). You won't find a cheaper way to get across and around the lake.

Highligts

Lausanne, Evian, the French Alps and the Montreux Festival

Hidden gems

Travel by train and unlimited boat trips with the SsBB Zagesticket Special

Destination recommendation

A successful combination of city tour and relaxation by the lake

Pros

Priced accommodation on the French side

Fantastic architecture in Lausanne

Cons

Geneva is rather dirty and noisy

For our visit to Lake Geneva, we booked accommodation in Ambilly. This town is in France, so the prices are much lower than in Switzerland, and we were also within walking distance of the city centre of Geneva. We were also quickly in the city centre by tram, or alternatively we could take regional trains to Annemasse. As the restaurant prices were very high, we bought our food in supermarkets and used the kitchen in our accommodation - there's nothing like raclette! During our holiday, we visited Lausanne, Evian and Annecy as well as Geneva. These towns were all easy to reach by train. Annecy is a very cosy little town on another lake and is highly recommended. The old town of Lausanne is also well worth a visit, although you need to be a good walker to manage the many inclines. The cathedral is particularly beautiful. If you go much further up, you can find a great panorama of Lake Geneva from a wooden observation tower. We were impressed by the view, but the walk was really long! Evian, on the other hand, didn't really appeal to us, it was a bit boring compared to the other towns. However, our favourite part of the trip was Geneva, where we explored the city extensively. The parks and the lake in particular cast a spell over us. We went swimming at Baby Plage as well as at the Perle du Lac, both places are worthwhile. We also recommend using the yellow local boats to cross Lake Geneva. Swimming in the Rhône and letting yourself drift with the current is a very special experience. So it's well worth coming in summer!

Highligts

For us, Geneva was the pearl on Lake Geneva. Not only is a tour of the city an absolute must, but also a visit to a beach including a swim. A particular highlight was swimming in the Rhône, where you can let yourself be carried along by the current. Lausanne is also worth a trip, and is also known as the city in 3D due to its slopes. We can also highly recommend a trip to Annecy, which is a very picturesque little town.

Hidden gems

Small yellow ferries, the mouettes, cross Lake Geneva, which can be used cheaply with local transport tickets. At the Perle du Lac park, you can swim in Lake Geneva and see Mont Blanc on a clear day. In Lausanne, there is a wooden observation tower on a hill from which you have a fantastic view.

Lake Geneva offers an impressive landscape for relaxing, especially the view from the surrounding mountains. However, access to the shore is often restricted, as many private properties extend right down to the water's edge. There are public promenades in Geneva and Nyon, but continuous paths along the lake are often lacking. The region is known for its high prices, which is typical of Switzerland. Nevertheless, it is worth a visit for the breathtaking panorama, especially in good weather. Geneva itself is often described as unspectacular, but the Red Cross Museum is interesting. Water sports enthusiasts get their money's worth when the weather is fine, and a trip along the north or south bank is recommended. The trips on the "Mouettes", the yellow boats that regularly sail to various destinations, are a special experience. The normal ticket for buses and trams is also valid for these boats. All in all, Lake Geneva is a great destination for nature and water sports enthusiasts, despite the high costs and restricted access.

Highligts

The view of Lake Geneva from the mountains is simply breathtaking. A boat trip on the "Mouettes" is a highlight to explore the various destinations around the lake. The Red Cross Museum in Geneva is also well worth a visit and offers interesting insights.

Hidden gems

An insider tip is a trip on the "Mouettes", the yellow boats that travel to various destinations around the lake. Practical: the normal ticket for buses and trams is also valid for these boats.

Destination recommendation

I would recommend Lake Geneva because of the breathtaking scenery, the wide range of water sports on offer and the convenient boat connections.

Pros

Breathtaking landscape

Wide range of water sports options

Cons

High costs in the region

Restricted public access to the shore
