Costa Blanca Getaways: Rent Calpe holiday homes & apartments
A coastal town in the province of Alicante along the Costa Blanca, the area is overlooked by the mighty Rock of Ifach – a large limestone rock rising 332 metres out of the Mediterranean and home of many rare species of wildlife. Also nicknamed the “Northern Rock” - in comparison the the Rock of Gibraltar, Ifach also offers a walking route taking visitors directly to the top, rewarding their efforts with incredible views over Calpe, the Mediterranean and on a clear day even to the Balearic Islands. Calpe dates back to the Bronze Age and for those interested in the history, archaeological artefacts can be found in the Museo de Historia de Calpe. Here you can also learn about the Roman civilization at the Salt Flats, also called the “Baños de la Reina”. Rare species of bird, including the flamingo, can be found in the salt flats. Visit the old town, where you can see the Torreo de la Peca, an 18th Century tower that is now the site of the Mueso del Colceccionismo (historical collections). Apart from the history, Calpe is home to stretches of wide beaches, with plenty of swimming and surfing possibilities in the warm Mediterranean. Walk down the long promenades and enjoy the local sea food, try tapas and relax in cafés along the coastline. The centre of the town is the main shopping district, with large, busy markets on Saturday mornings. If you are staying in a Calpe holiday home with family, there are plenty of activities to keep those of all ages busy: take a boat ride around Calpe's bay; visit the fish market; walk to the Plaza Mayor – a perfect space for children to play and climb on the frames. During July and August, go to the cinema on the beach: films for all ages are projected onto a large screen where you can sit back in the warm evening air on the sand.
