The city of Funchal impresses with its exceptional location right by the sea. On our trip, we took a sledge ride and a tour of the city by cable car. The view from the cable car is unique. Be careful when visiting the "Mercado dos Lavradores", as the prices for fresh fruit here are extremely high.

Funchal has a life of its own. The people are very approachable. I went on a whale watching tour, which was great. Even if you didn't see any whales yourself. I also did an island tour. This was done in a jeep, which brought me into contact with even more people. Generally speaking, Madeira is wonderful for nature lovers.

Madeira has very beautiful nature and for me is the perfect mix of city, hiking and beach. The city centre of Funchal is picturesque and the Rua de Santa Maria is a must-see. The Funchal cable car is also worth a visit. From the top you have a good overview of the city. You can also connect directly to the hiking trail at the top station and hike down. Getting around is relatively easy by bus, but also by Bolt Taxi. There are many good restaurants there.
Highligts
The Funchal cable car is definitely worth a ride. You have a great view of the city from the air. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is also worth a visit. The Mercado dos Lavradores is a fish market in Funchal.
Hidden gems
Rua de Santa Maria is a street in the historic centre of Funchal. There are many small restaurants and beautiful painted doors.

The view from the Monte was very impressive, and the botanical garden was my personal highlight. I often ate with my boyfriend in small, local restaurants, where the bronchi and fresh seafood were particularly delicious. The good public transport made it easy for us to get from A to B, and the taxis are also cheap. I would avoid the stone streets when travelling. They were really exhausting to walk.
Highligts
The cable car ride to Monte is an absolute must, the view is amazing. Sitting at the harbour in the evening and watching the lights is simply beautiful. Walking in the botanical gardens was also really nice. Funchal is really beautiful.
Hidden gems
Be sure to try the poncha in a small bar, it tastes really good. Visit the local markets for the best fresh fruit.
Destination recommendation
Funchal is the perfect mix of nature, culture and delicious food.
Pros
The landscapes with the many hiking trails were extremely impressive and beautiful.
The locals are very nice and friendly.
Cons
The steep roads were sometimes really exhausting.
In the evening it is rather quiet and there is not so much to experience.
