Grande Lisboa or Greater Lisbon is a subregion in the south west of Portugal, directly on the Atlantic ocean and north of the Tagus river. The capital city, Lisbon, is located within this district. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and its existence predates that of other modern European capitals such as Paris, London and Rome by hundreds of years. This makes the region popular with tourists and has secured its status as a location popular with tourists not only from Europe, but also for travellers from further afield who come to stay in rental properties here. The oldest district of Lisbon is Alfama, wich houses numerous Fado restaurants and bars, and there are also many historical tourist attractions in this location. Lisbon's subtropical Mediterranean climate ensures warm to hot summers and the mildest winters of any area on the European continent. A particularly low level of rainfall makes it a pleasure to book a visit at any time of year. There are many self catering Greater Lisbon holiday homes and other rentals available in this area to suit all budgets, from apartments to luxury villas.
