Herceg Novi is a town on the Bay of Kotor, a popular and picturesque region in Montenegro, which has been declared an up-and-coming destination, meaning renting a Herceg Novi holiday apartment is a great idea for your next holiday. Founded in the 14th century, it has been ruled by the Bosnians, Herzegovinians, Turks, Spaniards, Venetians, French and Montenegrins - this means the architecture in the city is interesting and varied, and some landmark buildings worth seeing include the Savina Monastery, the castle Forte Mare, the Serbian church of St Micahel Archangel, and Kanli Kula fortress. Throughout history, sailors have brought back the seeds of exotic plants to plant in the town: agave, magnolia, eucalyptus, jasmine, and mimosa, in honour of which there is a festival at the beginning of the year.
With a holiday rental in Herceg Novi you can enjoy visiting local markets for fresh produce, as well as trying the restaurants in the town centre. Herceg Novi even has a number of bars and nightclubs.
Near Herceg Novi
Just down the road from Herceg Novi is Igalo, a spa town whose slightly radioactive mud is said to be very healing. The town also has lovely beaches, making it perfect for a day trip from your Herceg Novi holiday apartment - it takes under an hour to walk there from the centre, or you could catch a local bus.
Other great day trip destinations can be reached by boat – for example, to Žanjice beach on the Lustiča peninsula, just across the bay, or to the Blue Grotto, a hidden cave where you can go swimming. Further into the Bay of Kotor is the beautiful historic town of Perast, where there are still many reminders of the Venetian Republic.
