We had a great day trip to the small neighbouring island of Gozo. We travelled from the large port of Valletta to the port of Mgarr in Gozo on a high-speed ferry. The journey took just 45 minutes and cost 15 euros, including the return journey. Once we arrived in Gozo, we went to the famous sandy beach, Ramla Bay. After a quick dip in the crystal-clear water, we continued on to the capital Victoria with its numerous sights, such as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Before travelling back to Malta, we fortified ourselves in Mgarr in one of the many inexpensive fish restaurants.

Highligts

The journey to Gozo was a real highlight. We took the high-speed ferry from the large harbour in Valletta to the harbour in Mgarr/Gozo in just 45 minutes.

Hidden gems

A real insider tip, for example, is the hiking route directly along the coast from Ramla Bay beach to the small fishing village of Marsalforn (duration 1h 15min)

Destination recommendation

There is a lot to discover on the island of Gozo and the advantage over the large island of Malta is that Gozo is not yet so overcrowded.

Pros

breathtaking views

favourable restaurant prices

Cons

Arrival only possible by ferry

The crossing from Cirkewwa/Malta to Gozo only takes about 20 minutes and costs a total of just €4.65 per round trip, which is very fair. It is therefore perfect for a day trip from the main island. On Gozo, you can use your Talinja Card for the buses or book a hop on/hop off tourist bus for a day for around €25. However, I didn't find this necessary for me. Unfortunately, the buses are sometimes very full and unpunctual. Victoria is a very beautiful city, but if you've already seen Valletta or Mdina, you'll already be used to the architecture. Nevertheless, the citadel in particular is well worth seeing. You don't need an entrance ticket to walk along the wall or the inner grounds. The pedestrian zone around the Basilica of San Gorg and the church itself also offer a lot to discover and are home to many tourist shops and eateries. Here I ate the local speciality "Rabbit stew", which I can recommend to anyone visiting Gozo. A little off the beaten track, but within easy walking distance, are the beautifully decorated Villa Rundle Gardens, which are great for relaxing and have lots of colourful and well-tended flower beds. The benches here even play music. Very nice. From Victoria, the famous Dwejra Cliffs, where the famous archway was located until a few years ago, can be easily reached in 20 minutes by bus. Here you can hike along the spectacular limestone coast or take a motorboat ride through the winding caves. There is also a good restaurant and two ice cream parlours here. The steep cliffs at Dwejra were definitely a highlight for me. However, the bus only arrives here every hour. Gozo is a great destination for a day trip, but I wouldn't spend a week here.

Highligts

Victoria/Rabat is very beautiful and can be easily explored on foot. The Basilica of San Gorg and the surrounding market with lots of local shops and restaurants are particularly worth a visit. We also visited the citadel, which is free to visit. The Dwejra Cliffs are easy to reach by bus from Victoria and definitely look spectacular.

Hidden gems

The Villa Rundle Gardens are beautifully decorated and the benches play music at the touch of a button! The Milky Way is said to be particularly easy to see at night in Dwejra Bay.

Destination recommendation

Gozo offers a great mix of very beautiful towns with a mixture of Arabic and Italian architecture and at the same time a lot of nature as well as great nature and views of the surrounding Mediterranean.

Pros

Great nature

Unique look of the limestone buildings

Cons

Unfortunately, like everywhere else in Malta, there is a lot of rubbish lying around in places

Local buses sometimes only run every hour and are regularly late and unreliable

Gozo is small enough to make a round trip around the island. You can do it with a HoponHopoff bus or by public transport. There are beautiful cliffs, crystal clear water and you can eat fish in many restaurants. There are also many hiking trails both inland and on the coast. You can enjoy snorkelling, diving and other water sports. The island is connected to its neighbouring islands by ferry and is therefore easy to travel to. There are some products, such as cheese, that are produced here on Gozo.

Highligts

Hiking, diving, water sports. Cliffs, small towns, nature and agriculture.

Hidden gems

Kiosk Pizza Stop in Marsalforn with a good view of the sunset. There are many small bays along the coast, so you don't have to go to the typical tourist beaches.

Destination recommendation

Diverse, not too many tourists yet. Authentic.

Pros

Authentic

Diverse

Cons

Public transport only runs infrequently

Discover the natural beauty of Malta with Gozo villas

Striking scenery, rolling green countryside with hills, and of course the beach and sparkling sea are all part of the allure of Gozo apartments, but if you want to have an island getaway somewhere a bit bigger, an ideal location for you would be the nearby Italian isles of Sardinia and Sicily. Foreign tourists just love to visit Gozo as they like to experience life in a slower paced country and stay in an idyllic, private holiday home with a pool and a nice view for complete relaxation and recreation. Many tourists here stay in rental properties, such as self catering Gozo villas or apartments.

Gozo apartments - sit back and relax on the beach

Spending a short break in Gozo is also very popular among the Maltese, who go there during weekends or for short breaks at all times of the year. Several factors combine to make Gozo an idyllic paradise - it may be the fascinating history and culture, the wonderful beaches, the opportunities to dive, the beautiful countryside or simply the potential to relax. Gozo villas are so lovely you may be tempted to stop several times on your strolls across the island to enjoy the views and go for a swim and a sunbathe on one of the stunning beaches before returning back to your rental property.

Don't miss the most important sights during your stay in Gozo villas

Some of the places of historic and cultural importance include the Ggantija Megalithic Temple which dates back to approximately 3600 BC and is amongst the oldest man-made sacred structures, the Citadella (The Citadel) which is a well-known fortified castle city, Azure Window, Ramla Bay, the Fungus rock, Calypsos Cave, Ta Pinu Basilica, and a whole host of other interesting places. If you are looking for a holiday with plenty to fill your time and where the fun never stops, but where there are also opportunities for some peace and quiet, look no further than Gozo apartments.
