My trip to Venice was an unforgettable experience in a city that uniquely combines history and romance. The absolute highlight was undoubtedly the gondola ride through the picturesque canals. The silent glide through the water, past historic palaces and picturesque bridges, conveyed a magical feeling that perfectly captured the unique charm of Venice. St Mark's Square with its impressive St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace was another highlight. The view from the Campanile di San Marco offered a breathtaking perspective of the city. Away from the main attractions, the Dorsoduro district was a real insider tip for me. The relaxed atmosphere, charming alleyways and cosy cafés made this part of Venice an ideal place to experience the authentic life of the city. Culinary Venice was a revelation. In a small restaurant in Cannaregio, I tried cicchetti, Venetian tapas, accompanied by a glass of regional wine. The authentic atmosphere and delicious flavours made this culinary experience a highlight of my trip. However, Venice was also overrun with tourists, especially at the main attractions. The queues at St Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge were sometimes daunting. A tip is to visit these places early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowds. One place I would avoid is the Murano glass market, which is rather touristy despite its fame. Instead, I recommend exploring the small, authentic artisan shops in the alleyways. Overall, my trip to Venice was a dreamlike experience that left me with lasting memories of the romantic beauty of this unique city.

Highligts

The gondola ride through the canals of Venice was the absolute highlight for me. It was a magical experience that perfectly captured the unique atmosphere of the city.

Hidden gems

A hidden tip for Venice is the Dorsoduro district. Here, away from the crowds of tourists, you will discover charming alleyways, cosy cafés and a relaxed atmosphere - perfect for experiencing authentic Venice.

Destination recommendation

Yes, it is quite nice to see but you have to bear in mind that there are masses of tourists there.

Pros

Very beautiful architecture

Beautiful gondola rides

We stayed at the Marina di Venezia campsite and went on a day trip to Venice. Once there, we walked through the alleyways and looked at the main squares and sights. The large squares and alleyways were sometimes very crowded with tourists. Further into the city, however, it was better and very nice to look at. Food is sometimes cheaper inside the city. Outside, it can be quite expensive. Getting around is sometimes difficult in the large, narrow streets. However, it is always possible. I wouldn't avoid anything in particular on my next trip.

Highligts

The beautiful alleyways. Lots of shopping opportunities at relatively reasonable prices. The canals with the gondolas are of course also very beautiful. The weather was also very good.

Hidden gems

Also use the alleyways that are not so crowded. Some of them are beautiful places.

Destination recommendation

Simply for the experience. Sometimes overcrowded but still very beautiful.

The trip was really nice. We had a great journey and arrived at the hotel quickly. Our hotel was the Rialto Unique Venice Experience. It was wonderful. The food was perfect and the ambience was lovely. My favourite part was St Mark's Basilica with its wonderful architecture. It really impressed me. I also loved the Correr Museum. I ate at the Rio Novo. It was right on the waterfront and had very tasty food. It's easy to get around on foot as there are bridges everywhere and you don't really need a car. And there were relatively few cars in the city. On my next trip, I would avoid staying in a hotel near the water as it was a bit smelly. I would also hide my valuables even better, as I was told that there are a lot of pickpockets in Venice. The best way to holiday there is as a couple. I therefore recommend Venice for couples rather than families, as there are not so many activities for children.

Highligts

The Italian food was particularly nice. It was also nice to go on a boat tour. You can also have a good look at the old buildings. You also have to see St Mark's Basilica.

Hidden gems

You have to go to Burano. There are not so many tourists there and a lot of locals. There is a very nice atmosphere there.

Destination recommendation

I recommend this destination as it is not very far away, but has a lot to offer and the city is well organised for tourism.

We flew to Venice at the beginning of September 2023 and had a hotel relatively centrally located on the "island". It was really nice to walk through the canals and over the many bridges. You have to cover all the routes and bridges on foot, so the city is more recommended for people who are fit on foot. Gondola rides are definitely recommended for couples. However, these are a little expensive. Overall, I think a lot is geared towards tourism, but Venice is still definitely worth seeing!

Highligts

The many canals and bridges are worth seeing. Gondola rides through the canals are very nice. St Mark's Square is a highlight. The small restaurants and shops are also very charming.

Hidden gems

A hop on hop off tour with a small boat to various small islands around Venice (Murano, Burano, Punta Sabbioni)

Destination recommendation

Unique city built on water. Incredibly beautiful canals and views.

Ideal for couples

My personal impressions of a week in Venice were extremely positive. The city impressed me with its rich history and the unique charm of its narrow streets and picturesque canals. St Mark's Square at sunset was a particularly impressive experience, with St Mark's Basilica and the Campanile in the warm light. I can only recommend it. The culinary variety in the cosy cafés of Dorsoduro was incredibly delicious, and I was particularly impressed by the fresh seafood and traditional pasta dishes. The local cuisine was therefore undoubtedly a highlight of my trip. I was also fascinated by the Doge's Palace and the hidden treasures of Cannaregio. I deliberately avoided the crowded tourist attractions in order to experience the authentic Venice in peace and quiet. I would recommend anyone to do the same. On the other hand, you can forget it. For my next stay, which will be soon, I plan to stay in a less crowded neighbourhood to experience Venice better at night. For me, the beauty of the city is particularly evident in the lesser-known corners. That's why Venice is a really recommendable destination for me. But you always have to watch out for the crowds of tourists. Otherwise you will be literally trapped in the city centre.

Highligts

The highlight of my trip was probably the sunset on St Mark's Square in Venice, which was magical. The colours over St Mark's Basilica and the Campanile were unforgettable.

Hidden gems

The lesser-known Dorsoduro neighbourhood: discover hidden alleyways and authentic cafés away from the crowds.

Destination recommendation

Because Venice is something different from other big cities.

Pros

Very romantic

Many beautiful buildings

Cons

All very expensive

Stay in a romantic holiday villa or apartment in the heart of Venice

Additionally, it is one of the most romantic cities in the country. Popular throughout the year, it is summer that sees the most guests descend upon this perfect city. Drawn to the city by the golden sunshine illuminating the architecture of Venice and somehow making it even more beautiful, millions of loved-up couples arrive in Venice between May and August, causing the world-famous St. Mark's Square to come alive – a heaving mass of bodies basking in the Italian heat.

City breaks Venice – how to get around and what to see

One activity that many like to do when staying in a holiday rental in Venice is go on a gondola ride. If you shop about, you can get a very reasonable price for just under €40 depending on how long and if you want a meal to come with the ride. There is nothing better than being driven around on the clear, blue waters of Venice with your loved one whilst taking in the gorgeous scenery. If you wish to see the sights, getting a water taxi is sometimes the only way to get around, however sometimes you can walk. Visit St Mark's basilica is a Roman Catholic cathedral church with fantastic architecture and historical heritage. The Torre dell'Orologio, known in English as St. Marks Clock Tower, is another great attraction in the city of Venice, whose lower floors make up an archway. Found in a picturesque plaza of the city, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby for you to sample the Italian cuisine. Sample true Italian-made pizza and pasta and you will find it difficult not to come back to the region of Veneto, where Venice is, every year! Short breaks to Venice are suitable for every budget as many things can be done for a relatively reasonable price, so long as you plan in advance. Choose from a wide range of holiday apartments in the heart of the city, from everything to luxury, contemporary rentals to holiday homes with terraces.

If you enjoy city breaks to Venice but find yourself wanting to visit somewhere else, why not visit the Italian island of Sicily. Equally romantic but with a beautiful coastline, it is a great island for sun, sea and sand whilst incorporating Italian values, such as great food and lovely hospitality. After more romantic trips? Then why not plan an extended weekend break in the romantic city of Paris.

Home of enchanting gondolas and idyllic canal rides

Like a ride in those ubiquitous gondolas, a visit to St. Mark's Square is a must, if you want to get your Venetian holiday just right. An interesting fact, bound to come up in pub quiz trivia at some point, is that this famous square is one of the few places in the world, where the sound of people talking is enough to drown out the noise of the traffic in the surrounding area. Given all of those cliches we've all heard about Italian drivers, this is no mean feat! Venice is known for its bridges such as the Rialto but interestingly Hamburg has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam

Does spending time on the beach sound more appealing than a cultural city break? You might want to a look at the lovely Naples apartments and villas La Spezia!
