Sopron holiday rentals - medieval meets neoclassical on the Austrian border
Sopron, near the Austrian border in north west, is a wonderful mixture of Hungarian and Austrian culture, and one of few cities in Hungary with many examples of medieval architecture. A Sopron holiday rental is a great idea for anyone who enjoyed Vienna or Budapest, or has visited Pecs and Debrecen and would like to see some more Hungarian culture.
The main landmark of the city is the Firewatch Tower, looming over the city centre – you can climb up the stairs in the tower for some panoramic views over Sopron. You can also see across the whole city from the viewing areas of Karoly and Varhely watch towers, just outside the city centre on Avas hill. Sopron, or former Scarbantia, also has impressive Roman ruins.
There are plenty of cultural things to see and do when you have a holiday rental Sopron. To learn more about the every day life of some historical residents in Sopron, visit the Pharmacy Museum, a preserved 17th century pharmacy, and the Bakery Museum, a preserved bakery that was in use from 1686 until 1970. At the other end of the spectrum is Esterhaza, in nearby Fertod. It's worth getting a tour around this incredibly ornate Baroque palace, which is often called the Hungarian Versailles, and was the home of composer Joseph Haydn for a number of years.
