Whilst staying in an Apartment in Dresden, why not book a city tour to get a good insight into the city and its roots. On many of these tours, you will pass the Dresden Frauenkirche, a church that was finally rebuilt in 2005 after many years of reconstruction. There is an outstanding viewing platform available here which gives you a view of the entire city and the interior design of the church is well worth checking out. The Semperoper is a beautiful opera house which was rebuilt after the war and hosts fantastic concerts all year round within its interior and is second only to Dresden Castle in its beauty. The Castle was also nearly flattened in the war but has been restored to its former glory and features various styles of architecture including Baroque. Prior to its destruction, Dresden was regarded as a beautiful city of culture and now after rebuilding, feels much as it would have done prior to 1945.
The Neustadt district, located near the river Elbe, is a beautiful area of Dresden which has many cafés, restaurants and parks to stroll through during the summer. The Dresden Elbe Valley where you can get a view over the river meadows and the city of Dresden. Stretching over 20 kilometres, this area also hosts many film nights during the summer period so you can enjoy an exceptional view of the entire city of Dresden whilst the sun sets.
If you fancy traveling around during your stay, head to the other large Eastern city of Leipzig which is perfect for sightseeing and shopping! After a day of sightseeing, you might just want to kick back in your Dresden apartment and try cooking German style! Then why not try making Bratkartoffeln - fried potatoes with added onion or Bacon, whichever suits your taste! Germany is of course known for its many varieties of sausage and as Sauerkraut, better known as pickled cabbage is regularly an accompaniment. Hearty potato soup is also a great German speciality. For those with a sweet tooth, we recommend going out to one of the many restaurants and cafés in Dresden and sampling Quarkkeulchen (sweetened potato pancakes) or Eierschecke (cheesecake).
Dresden is located near the border to the Czech Republic, why not visit Prague as part of a multi-city trip? You will find a cultural metropolis with beautiful buildings and a vibrant bar scene too.
