Book The Trip of a Lifetime to Berlin

Berlin has a fascinating and complex history that continues to evolve today and this is demonstrated in the immensity and grandeur of both its old and modern attractions. From the monolithic columns of the Brandenburg Gate to the futuristic glass towers and parachute-pavilion of the breathtaking Sony Centre, Berlin provides a striking sense of the convergence of old and new.

Berlin accommodation - on the footsteps of German history

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the division between East and West Berlin was phenomenal, and to this day the rifts can still be seen in places. The city can be found close to Poland and the Polish border is less than 60 miles away. The city of Berlin has lots to offer every visitor. A focal point of the Cold War during the 20th Century, head to Checkpoint Charlie which was a crossing point from East to West Berlin. Stood as a monument today, it is well worth checking out whilst in the city. Other great sights to visit in the city of Berlin include the Brandenburg Gate, massive pillars which have been at the forefront of Germany's history for years. The nearby German parliament, the Reichstag, can be found around the corner and if you go inside, you have a breath-taking overview of the city of Berlin!

Berlin is probably one of the most striking places in Germany for tourists to witness the vivid architectural divide between Soviet-bloc buildings on one side and a Western European feel on the other side. Checkpoint Charlie is also a fascinating monument which stands as a monument representing the division Berlin faced at the time. Berlin’s Holocaust Museum is a reminder of the dark history directly preceding the division of the city. This is truly a city full of memories. When U.S. President John F. Kennedy declared that the whole world stood with Berlin, and that he, too, was a citizen of Berlin, he touched on the essence of the city. Of course, the precise words that he used – “Ich bin ein Berliner” – drew affectionate chuckling from the crowd because they literally meant, “I am a Donut.” Named after its home city, the Berliner is a tasty treat that can be found at bakeries throughout the city and you must try it whilst staying in a holiday apartment in Berlin. If you find yourself wanting to explore the German history further, the cities of Dresden and Nuremberg are both extremely diverse and offer a great holiday in Germany.

Experience the famous nightlife and taste some specialities of delicious cuisines in Berlin

If you are looking for places to go during the evening, then you will be spoilt for choice in Berlin. The nightlife here is extremely vibrant in this metropolis and there are many bars and clubs throughout the city so you can party till your hearts content.

Kreuzberg is a fascinating, yet increasingly bohemian neighbourhood with a strong café culture and plenty of things to do at night. This area is also a focal point of Turkish immigrants, which allows visitors to enjoy delicious kebabs, schwarmas and honey-drenched baklava. Furthermore, is popular amongst residents and visitors alike although you are bound to find a decent eatery wherever you are! Sample the traditional German sausage, the Bratwurst, or the curried sausage, Currywurst. Often served in a bread bun, why not try German pretzels as well as they are truly delicious; although some Germans argue the best you can find are in Munich! If you do not feel like making your own breakfast, make sure you eat a traditional German breakfast of cheeses, sausages and hams with the best-made bread buns! For those with a sweet tooth, make sure you sample the traditional coffee and cake and select from a wide range of great German cakes. These include the Blackforest Gateau or Apfeltorte, a pastry made up with an apple filling.

The bi-weekly Turkish street market by the river is a splendid affair featuring fresh fruit and vegetables, Turkish spices, treats and knick-knacks. Pick up some delicious food here to prepare in the privacy of your self catering Berlin accommodation. From Kreuzberg, leave your holiday rental property for a bit and climb up into the Viktoriapark to find a gently sloping hill, shady trees providing relief from the hot summer sun, and a superb view of the city. Berlin's nightlife is world famous - there's something for everyone in Kreuzberg, Mitte or Friedrichshain, particularly in the summer when nightlife meets culture in various open air events across the city. Wherever you decide to stay, you are sure to enjoy the magic of this unique city.

A tour with a twist

Taking a city tour is one of the most famous and traditional things to do, however instead of taking any one of the generic tours with guides who show all the standard things why not take a tour that truly shows Berlin from a unique and personal point of view. The Refugee Voice Tour is done by refugee tour guides, they will take you all over Berlin and show you the city through their eyes. As part of the tour they explain why they are in Berlin and highlights the parallels between what happened in Berlins past to what’s happening now in Syria, using significant historical places. This shows a very different side of Berlin and gives you the chance to uniquely understand the Syrian refugees living in Berlin and what the city means to them.

Best Escape Anyone Can Have (B.E.A.C.H)

There’s no place to relax like at the beach and in Berlin you really can have the best of both worlds with a city and a beach, escape without having to leave the city at all. The place to go is Badeschiff, here if you fancy donning your finest swimwear you can float away in the River Spree with stunning views of the TV Tower, Molecule Man and Oberbaumbrücke alongside the gorgeous water. Or if you aren’t a massive water fan but rather prefer sitting in a sun lounger and relaxing then they have that too with an artificial beach with all the beach feels you could possibly want. Then as if it could get any better they have a DJ and cocktails too meaning its impossible for anyone not to be in absolute heaven. Or visit YAAM, here is another fabulous beach bar spot however, minus the water. It is known for its laid back and relaxed atmosphere and even offers tai chi classes.

A journey through time

For an experience like no other the place to go is Prinzipal, it is a bar hidden along the busy streets of Kreuzberg. It is a 20s – inspired speakeasy and will give you a true flash back as to what it would’ve been like back then. True to form it isn’t an easy place to find, you have to find its unmarked green door and ring the door bell to enter, so the risk of accidently ringing the doorbell of someone’s actual house is probably quite high. However, the traumatics of finding the place and potentially attempting to enter someone’s house will all be worth it when you finally get in, not only is the interior absolutely stunning with a very nostalgic atmosphere but they are also known for having some of the best cocktails in Berlin and along side your fabulous drink showing intimate yet breathtakingly stunning Burlesque shows.
