There is so much to discover in the Bavarian Forest. We stayed at the Hotel Klosterhof in Neukirchen bei Heiligen Blut. The hotel is super-affordable and the price-performance ratio is right. From there, it was only a 10-minute drive across the Czech border. On the way there in Furth im Wald there is a game reserve. That was my absolute highlight, as admission was free and you could feed the animals for €1 per bag. We also went hiking on the Schwarzriegel and visited Sector F (NATO towers). The only negative aspect is the long journey, as we travelled around 4 hours by car.

Highligts

There are lots of activities in the Bavarian Forest region. We were in Neukirchen near Heilien Blut. From there it was only a 10-minute drive to the Czech border.

Hidden gems

The game reserve in Furth im Wald is highly recommended, especially for families with small children. Entry is free, you can buy food for the animals (€1) and then feed them.

Destination recommendation

Highly recommended, as you can do a lot there

Pros

Many activities in the neighbourhood

I thought the trip was good overall, but a little too expensive. My favourite places were Zwiesel, the national park and the treetop walk. We mostly ate at the accommodation. If you are there by car it is easy to get around. Going to a bigger town and taking lots of things with you

Highligts

Treetop walk. Glass pond. National park, lots of animals.

Hidden gems

A good tip is the national park next to Zwiesel, and the treetop walk is also good

Destination recommendation

Lots of nature and animals

Pros

Lots of nature and animals

We spent a month in the Bavarian Forest as a group of around 30 students. As participants in the "excellent winter" programme, we lived together in huts. In total, we were accommodated in one hut in Viechtach, Frauenau and Deggendorf. We had a first-class time. As a team-building exercise, we got to know each other at a sports facility in Regen and then went on a hike on the slopes of the Großer Aber. It was a slippery affair. At the Chamer Hütte, we fortified ourselves and spent the night before tobogganing down the slope again the next day. While we were there, some of us visited the "glass village", regularly went to the sauna or explored the natural surroundings. I was glad to have explored this region by car. I can't say how it works with public transport. In any case, as a native of North Friesland, I practised and learnt how to drive uphill.

Tobogganing on the slope of the big but

Hidden gems

The Kaiserschmarn at the Chramer Hütte

Destination recommendation

The whole family enjoyed the trip. With our own car, it was no problem to reach all the destinations. Cooking together in the accommodation promoted family cohesion. I can only recommend a city tour of Passau. The cathedral in particular is worth a visit.

Highligts

Pure nature in the Bavarian Forest, there is something for every nature lover. I spent a few days on a farm with my family. It was in a very beautiful location. The children were allowed to help with the tallarbrit. I can also highly recommend the hikes through the national park. All the paths were well signposted.

Hidden gems

Forest treetop trail in Sankt Engelmar. Here you can climb an approx. 60 metre high observation tower. The view extends as far as the Zugspitze.

Destination recommendation

I would recommend the Bavarian Forest all year round, because whether it's winter sports or outdoor activities, there's always something to do here.

Pros

Nature

Family friendly

Cons

The accommodation was very remote

We drove to a holiday home in Spiegelau by car. From there, we went hiking almost every day after picking up food from a bakery. I really liked the paths there and we saw lots of different animals. We also went to a wildlife park. The children especially liked it, even though the animals were hard to see because the enclosures were so big. But of course it's better for the animals. On the last day we went to Falkenstein Castle. That was also very interesting. We ate in the restaurant there. Then we took the car to the holiday home and back again.

Highligts

We often went hiking in the beautiful forest here. Once we went to the wildlife park. We also visited Falkenstein Castle.

Hidden gems

It's smart to install a hiking app to discover new and less-travelled paths.

Destination recommendation

The forest is so beautifully natural and simply relaxing.

Pros

Great nature

Many animal species

Cons

Few options apart from hiking

Paths sometimes very full
