The area of Lake Constance and Upper Swabia is renowned for its beauty and offers many recreational activities and sights for tourists visiting the area. Located in the south of Germany and linking the Austrian and Swiss borders to Germany, the region is famous for the spectacular Rhine Falls, relaxing spas and the scenic hills which surround various points of the lake.
As Lake Constance is the 3rd largest in Europe, there are naturally a host of different sights and environments to explore. The island town of Lindau is famous for its 12th century lighthouse and lovely architecture which is made all the better by the complete absence of cars meaning that you can wander the cobbled streets and enjoy fresh food and drink while gazing into the distance as the waters of Lake Constance splash gently against the harbour walls.
Even more tranquil is the garden island of Mainau which holds immaculate beds of flowers and a greenhouse filled with butterflies which create a radiant sea of colours. Reichenau the largest island in Lake Constance has preserved wall paintings from the Ottonian period within the boundaries of St George’s Church. The Pfahlbaumuseum at Unteruhldingen is also well worth visiting, offering a fascinating insight into a forgotten way of life and demonstrating how primitive Stone and Bronze Age residents of Lake Constance made use of their surroundings to form their own way of life.
