Named after the Sarthe river which runs right through this pretty part of the Loire Valley, this area was made into a department at the end of the French Revolution and has a wealth of lovely places to visit, as well as many lovely Sarthe holiday rentals of a very high standard.
A visit to the centrally situated town of 'Le Mans' is a must, and many holiday homes Sarthe are situated here because this city is also host to the famous, 'Le Mans' endurance race. However, there is also a lovely medieval town, and much of the Roman walls, that once encircled this city, are still in place and there are great light shows on summer evenings which tell the story of this city.
Further north in Sarthe, there are also some Sarthe holiday rentals near to the town of 'La Ferte Bernard', which is probably the most picturesque old town in the region. With the lovely old 'Porte Saint Julian' acting as a signpost into the medieval town, this is a town rich in culture and great old buildings. The church, 'Notre-Dame-des-Marais' was built in the 15th/16th century and is an impressive example of 'flamboyant Gothic' style and boasts fantastic gargoyles.
Sarthe is also a great region for lakes and the one at Marçon is very well served for sports and activities. Stay in one of many holiday homes Sarthe, and try some local cheese and, as the region is famous for wine, perhaps try the white wine called, 'Jasnières', great with the local pork based pate, called, 'Rillettes'.
Within easy reach of Sarthe holiday rentals are many other parts of France to discover such as Indre-et-Loire, Loire Atlantique and Vendee, as well as travelling to the nearby region of Brittany where there's even more beautiful French architecture and local cuisine in Ille-et-Vilaine to discover.
