We travelled by train (TGV) from Paris to Marseille. The railway station is on a hill. Our hotel was right next to it. When you come out of the station building, you have a beautiful view over the city. We knew that the harbour area was the busiest and so we set off. You only ever walk downhill, past numerous shops, squares and restaurants. There are many alleyways to the left and right, which are also very busy. The closer you get to the harbour, the more crowded it gets. Many poorer people want to sell you things to earn some money. The harbour divides the city into two areas. Both sides have beautiful sights and many great restaurants. You can take small ferries from one side of the harbour to the other. This is not very expensive and saves a lot of time. Marseille Cathedral and the viewpoint at the entrance to the harbour are very impressive. The view from the "Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde" is even more impressive. It is very easy to get there by bus. All in all, I can highly recommend Marseille.

Highligts

We travelled from Paris to Marseille by TGV. When you come out of the station building, you are immediately struck by the enormous view over the city. It's really impressive. You then walk all the way downhill into the city and then reach the equally impressive harbour of Marseille.

Hidden gems

The harbour divides the city into 2 parts. However, small ferries take you from one side to the other. This is not very expensive and you save a lot of time before walking around the harbour.

Destination recommendation

Travelling in late summer is recommended as it is not quite as hot then.

Pros

Beauty of the harbour

View from the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica

Cons

Partly dirt in the alleys of the city

many poorer people who want to sell you something

The vibrant harbour city in the south of France fascinates with its captivating mix of pure history and lively culture and breathtaking atmosphere. The harbour is one of the most beautiful spots in Marseille. I ate at the Laurent restaurant, very tasty there. Public transport is very easy to use and taxis are also available. I would get to know the culture more.

Ask local people for the best restaurants. You should look a little further out of the city centre for reasonably priced restaurants.

Marseille is probably the perfect holiday destination for most people. The highlight for me was a visit to the Saint-Jean fortress, an impressive building with a moving history. My insider tip is definitely to visit the Marseille History Museum. There are numerous inviting restaurants, such as La Poule Noire. I would recommend a stay in Marseille.

A very nice trip in and of itself. We liked the old harbour of Marseille and the surrounding towns best. The view from the church was also great. We mainly ate in smaller restaurants. They were very reasonably priced and delicious. Next time we would probably go in June so that the weather is even better.

Highligts

One of the highlights was the arrival of the Olympic flame. The atmosphere in the city and the event were great. The Ile Vert was also great. The food is also worth mentioning.

Hidden gems

Cassis and Chateau d Ive were definitely worth a visit. The church is also worth a visit.

Destination recommendation

The weather and people are just great.

Rent wonderful holiday accommodation in Marseille

Full of cultural diversity and historical attractions, the city of Marseille is a haven for taking time off and relaxing. Whether you choose to visit the beach or you decide to visit the nearby attractions to experience a bit of French history, you can always rely on affordable Marseille apartments for overnight stays. If you desire more luxury, then villas in Marseille are a good option as they fitted with modern furnishings, swimming pools and internet services. From Marseille villas you're able to start a dreamlike round-trip along the famous French Riviera - the Cote d'Azur. If you start in Marseille, your first stop could be Toulon. There is also the possibility to start from Italy and fly to Pisa, so that you're able to visit the lovely Cinque Terre before arriving in Marseille. If either of these sound like an attractive proposition, be sure to visit some of the following places along the way:

Visit a Historical City Located on the Cote d'Azur

The city of Marseille has numerous historic buildings dotting its streets. The main attractions of the city are the beautifully constructed cathedrals which are some of the most glorious in France. Having said that, there is no building more impressive than the Basilique Notre Dame de La Garde. It was built in the 19th century and sits on the city's highest point near the Vieux Port. The most outstanding part of this building is the thirty foot high Golden Virgin that is installed on top of the church's bell tower, which in itself is a sight to behold, standing is eight feet high and weighing over eight tons. The Basilica is decorated in marble and has beautiful murals hung in the building itself. Finally the Palais Longchamp is a magnificent palace with fantastic gardens which look beautiful all year round. After a day at these awe-inspiring attractions, you'll be relieved to be able to recharge your battery amongst the comfort of the many Marseille apartments that punctuate the city.

Marseille Apartments – Great for Sightseeing Lovers

Another beautiful place to visit is the Centre de la Vieille Charite. Formerly a workhouse and public hospice, the 17th century building is the jewel of the Panier district in Marseille, France. The house is now used as a culture melting pot and expose centre. It also houses the Marseille Archeological Museum and the Musee des Arts Africains, Oceaniens and Maerindiens. With so much on offer, you won't want to go home!

  • Stop to be a part of the nightlife in St. Tropez
  • Stay for some days in Antibes apartments and don't miss to visit Cannes
  • Relax on a dreamlike beach in Cap d'Ail after visiting Nice in the morning
  • The next day you'll arrive Italy and its popular villas Imperia
  • Enjoy the views on the Ligurian coast while driving one hour to Genoa
