One of the best ways to see Helsinki is by walking along its water front, you can take a 4-mile pathway that you can walk which will take you from one end of the waterfront to the other. Along the walk you will encounter many wonderful things that you wont mind at all stopping by to take a break from walking with there being something for everyone along the way. While walking along the Eastern side of the peninsula you’ll find Hietaniemi Beach which is perfect for the beach lovers, on a lovely sunny day there won’t be any other place that you’ll want to spend your day in Helsinki. Then as you go further along you’ll pass the Sibelius Monument, perfect for the art lovers. Which is an abstract sculpture that commemorates Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius. Then there are also plenty of gorgeous tree lined parks along the way too perfect for those nature lovers and explorers and lastly there are lots of ice cream stalls which is something everyone can’t not love.
The best way to experience any seafood dishes in Helsinki is during crayfish season, from late July to the end of August everyone in Helsinki comes out dressed in their best and heads for the seafood restaurants. Join the locals and immerse yourself in the culture while eating crayfish paired with Akvavit in quite a surprisingly complicated and precise traditional ritual. This is the only place in the world where you’ll be able to experience it and eat crayfish in this very specific way. Head to a local seafood restaurant where the waiters will fill you in on how to join in with the eating festivities and when to take your shot of Akvavit, so be prepared. However, the excitement doesn’t end there, it goes on then to traditional drinking songs where everyone joins in and trying to keep up with the right words can be more challenging than you’d think.
It is literally impossible to visit Helsinki and not go to a sauna at least once, firstly sauna is actually a Finnish word and the history behind them in Finland is very strong and slightly strange with there being a time where the Finns believed every sauna had a sauna elf. Which was a spirit in gnome form that guarded the sauna from fire and other damages, part of the traditions to keep the gnome happy the Finns would leave one cup of water for the gnome or at Christmas a bowl of porridge. Therefore, it is an absolute must to visit one and if you look carefully while you’re in there you might even catch a fleeting glimpse of a little gnome.
