Lääne County, situated in western Estonia, is one of the 15 counties that make up the country. Bordering on the Baltic Sea to the north and Harju County to the north-east, Lääne County is filled with history, culture and many “hidden gems” of Estonia.
One of the must-sees during your stay in Lääne County accommodation, is Matsalu National Park. The nature reserve stretches over 400km2 of land and coastline and is one of Europe's best bird watching destinations, with over 250 species recorded here. The park is an ideal spot to relax in nature on the many walking and hiking trails, or by boat or bicycle. The Kasari River, which runs through the park and drains into Matsalu Bay, also hosts a majestic 6-meter high waterfall which can be visited with free parking. Most guests enjoy a relaxing stroll around the area, or a meal at the nearby restaurants.
About an hour from Matasulu National Park, lies Haapsalu, an old seaside town and the county town of Lääne County. Haapsalu is historically known as a health resort area, with warm sea water, fresh air, healing mud and a relaxing atmosphere. Due to its location, and the Old Town's location on a peninsula, Haapsalu has also been referred to as “the Venice of the Baltics”. Dating back to the 13th Century, Haapsalu contains many old buildings, including the medieval Haapsalu Castle and gardens. Renting Haapsalu holiday homes or apartments offers you a little piece of history. Here, you can stroll around at leisure, or choose to take a guided tour and earn about the “legend of the White Lady” who allegedly still haunts the castle today. The Castle lies in the “Old Town”, on the peninsula of land, with influences from both the medieval and health resort time periods. With plenty of wooden houses, narrow streets and numerous small, local cafes to enjoy, Haapsalu Old Town really is a hidden gem of the region.
Estonia may be relatively small but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in culture, beauty and character. After spending your break in a Lääne County holiday home, visit the capital city, Tallinn. Located on the northern coast of Estonia and with one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, Tallinn is one of the most dynamic and characteristic – not to mention beautiful – areas on the continent.
