Opatija is a pearl in the Kvarna Bay. The buildings in Opatija are known for their magnificent architecture. Many historic villas can be found along the coast and lend the town a charming character.
You can explore the most beautiful sights of Opatija on foot by walking along the Franz Joseph Promenade, the so-called Lungomare.
The Lungomare is a beautiful promenade and offers a special opportunity to enjoy the fresh sea air and experience the coastal landscape with its many bays. A visit to Opatija is incomplete without a walk along the Lungomare.

Review
The Kvarner Bay is one of my favourite travel destinations, especially Opatija. Opatija is pure elegance, with its chic accommodation and beautiful promenades. I would say it's almost unique in Croatia. Here you can really relax, eat well and enjoy the historic architecture. Rijeka, on the other hand, has a completely different flair - more industrial, but with a cool urban vibe. The city has a great art and cultural scene, so it's perfect for anyone who loves city life. A little tip: be sure to take a walk along the Lungomare in Opatija, the view of the sea is simply marvellous. In Rijeka, don't miss the Trsat Fortress, the view over the city and the bay is brilliant. Other towns such as Crikvenica, Rab and Krk are also worth a visit - each has its own charm. I've been to Kvarner Bay very often, for over 7 years, because it's so close to Austria - only a few hours' drive away. But beware, public transport in the region is really unreliable. Buses come when they want, so it's better to travel by car or be patient. Taxis are quite cheap and the distances are usually not very far - Opatija and Rijeka are only 15-20 minutes apart and you can even get there by bike. The cuisine is fantastic, especially the fish dishes. However, the boat trips I went on were too touristy and not recommended. And, well, you have to be prepared for a bit of industrial flair in Rijeka. But Opatija is really chic again.

Hidden gems
Off the beaten track: hidden bays for relaxed swimming. There's plenty of fresh seafood at the local markets! And inland villages have real Croatian flair and beautiful views.

Holiday Homes Kvarner Bay at the Kvarner Riviera in Croatia
The breathtaking harbour at Kvarner Bay has given rise to some of Croatia’s most wild beach holiday resort towns, especially Opatija, to which young holiday makers flock in the peak, summer months. It’s not just the pristine waters that make Kvarner Bay so attractive, but also the incredible Croatian mountains cropping up alongside the coast, looming above the villas Kvarner Bay and holiday cottages, and the merry tourists below on the picture-perfect white sandy beaches and luxury villas with a sea view to rent along the coast, as well as the numerous islands held within this small beautiful place. For all your transportation needs in the Kvarner Gulf, the city of Rijeka is a starting point for buses, taxis, car rental and ferries going out to the islands and it even has an airport.
Initial point for island-hopping - Villas Kvarner Bay
While many make these islands their temporary homes by deciding to rent cheap holiday homes Kvarner Bay and apartments or making resort holiday rentals well in advance, many go out from Rijeka simply for weekend break of island hopping, enjoying the unique views that only the water’s surface can provide. Must-visit islands include Krk, Losinj, Cres, Rab and Mali Losinj, although the crowds you enjoyed on the mainland are here on the islands as well. Check the weather reports before booking your self catering villa anywhere in the Kvarner Bay, because a serious downside for holidays to this enclave are the fierce winds, call “bura”, which can be unpleasant, although you can stay in your holiday home. You can't get enough of island-hopping? Sicily and Sardinia are waiting for you!
Holidays Kvarner Riviera - For outdoor fans
After all, Kvarner Riviera is decidedly an outdoor destination. When the wind evens out, it’s absolutely idyllic for water sports such as sailing, yachting, water skiing and windsurfing. In addition, the land-based sports of tennis, beach volleyball and more are commonly available at the holiday rental resorts. When dining out in the Kvarner Bay, be sure to sample local seafood dishes and Mediterranean food that are typical to the region. Renting a self catering villa with a pool is highly recommended, and various price ranges are available from a cheap holiday to a luxury rental.
