The Ardennes were believed to be impassable by generals who tried to go through it throughout history due to their density, so much so that the French left this region unguarded, allowing the Germans to invade unopposed in the Second World War. Later in the war Bastogne on the Belgium side of the Ardennes was the site of one of the key German offensives which was thwarted by American Forces positioned there. This was a decisive moment in the push by the allies towards Germany and there is an excellent museum at Bastogne on the battle, which narrates the story from the perspectives of participants on each side. The Ardennes are a beautiful region to visit and make a great choice of destination.
