Similarly to Iceland, this region is known for its folklore and although there are contrasting scientific theories as to where the name of this city actually came from, according to stories of old it is quite simple. Supposedly there was once a giant named Antigoon who wouldn't let anyone cross over the river without paying him a toll. If they refused to pay, he would cut off their hands. One day, a brave young hero called Brabo had had enough. He fought the giant and cut off his hand, and threw it into the river. Hence the Dutch name 'Antwerpen' which comes from the two old Dutch words hand and werpen, which translate as 'hand' and 'throw'!
