I was in the Kitzbühel area in May 2023. It was a very nice trip. The village is in the middle of the Tirol area in the Austrian Alps and the views of the mountains there are really outstanding. The area offers many possibilities for sport lovers: such as nice hikes (I recommend the 5 lakes hiking), biking or skiing if its winter season. We stayed at Hopfgarten(15 minutes by car from Kitzbühel) because it was cheaper than staying in the village of Kitzbühel.

I recommend staying in the villages nearby if you want to save some money. Kitzbühel is expensive.

The general travelling experience was very nice, as I had already heard a lot about Kitzbühel. I liked the town centre best, where there are lots of nice shops and it's a great place to spend time. I ate at the top of the mountain in the Sonnenbühl restaurant. This was also highly recommended. Getting around is also very easy as there are buses and trains. On my next trip there, I would want to arrive a little earlier, as the pistes are emptier then and it is easier to ski.

You could ski very well as the pistes were very good. There were also lots of nice restaurants. Walking through the Christmas market is also a very nice activity. Travelling by car was also pleasant.

Hidden gems

An insider tip is to go to the Sonnenbühl after skiing to experience good après-ski.

I liked the small town centre of Kitzbühel best. With its small alleyways and shops. The Hahnenkamm was also a very special experience. You can climb it on foot or take the cable car. A breathtaking view awaits you from the top. The huts offer very tasty food, which is unfortunately also very expensive. Kitzbühel also offers many opportunities for mountain biking, which was very nice. With the bikes or on foot, everything was easy to get to and eat in the town centre. Kitzbühel offers a travelling experience that you won't soon forget.

The town of Kitzbühel in Tyrol in Austria is particularly famous for the annual ski race on the Hahnenkamm and wealthy individuals. Kitzbühel is also worth a visit for the average Joe, especially when it gets warmer, as it does in spring. Kitzbühel is very crowded in winter. We ate at the Pizzeria Centro, for other good restaurants you have to eat outside Kitzbühel in my opinion. The mountain railway to the Hahnenkamm is very expensive, but it's worth it for skiing and a delicious Kaiserschmarren. It was also very crowded in March, so I would recommend coming in the low season.

In fact, it won Austria's Best Ski Resort in 2013 and 2014 and together with nearby Kirchberg the resort is home to 170km of pistes, eleven cable cars and over thirty ski lifts. It is also particularly reliable when it comes to natural snow, and each season an average of 155 skiing days are possible. Despite the size of the resort, many of our holiday apartments in Kitzbühel are less than 1km from skiing areas, making them well located and easy to access.

Experience the world renowned slopes and aprés ski

Kitzbühel is home to Streif, the downhill run where the famous Hahnenkammrennen takes place. The resort is also fantastic for freeriding and the snowboard park is constantly being added to, improved and updated with new pipes and rails. Anyone with a holiday rental in Kitzbühel can also go cross-country skiing, ice skating, moonlight skiing, go on guided winter walks and hikes, play curling and go sledging. Kitzbühel also hosts the annual Snow Polo World Cup. If you like to aprés ski as much as you like to ski, then a holiday rental in Kitzbühel is perfect for you. With Streifalm, Hahnenkamm Pavillion, Oberkaseralm on the slopes, The Londoner Pubs and Club Take Five in the town centre, there are plenty of options to choose from and you certainly won't run out of options!

Of course, aprés-ski in the comfort of your own apartment is a good idea too. Kitzbühel is easily accessible by car from Innsbruck, the nearest airport, but why not get an overnight train? Many trains stop at Kitzbühel; from Salzburg and Munich to Zurich and Paris. Ready to try skiing somewhere different? Check out Lech am Arlberg and Innsbruck.
