Calabria Holiday Rentals & Holiday Villas Calabria

Emerald sparkling waters, hillsides that turn golden in the sunset, centuries-old white walled building cropping up preciously upon craggy peninsulas jutting out into the sea – this is Calabria, one of the most enchanting, romantic and captivating holiday destinations in all of Italy.

Those who like to see Italy as a boot will note that Calabria is the toe. This almost bizarre geographical claim to fame is also what gives Calabria a special edge: miles and miles of breathtaking coastline and dramatic vistas from the balcony of your holiday home, and just about everywhere else, too.

Despite extensive (and entirely understandable) tourism in the region, much of the local culture has seemingly been untouched for centuries, perhaps even millennia. Ancient fishing villages and warmhearted fishermen, craftsmen, vendors at street markets and shopkeepers seem to preserve a special charm unique to Calabria – it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. Visit the market and cook up your own traditional Italian meal in your self catering holiday home.

A good place to start out your holidays in Calabria and possibly set up “base camp” is the largest city, Reggio. There are a variety of holiday accommodation here, including holiday apartment rentals Calabria, holiday homes Calabria and luxury villas. The San Prospero plaza is a great place to sip the local wine and do some people-watching, of course only after checking out the awe-inspiring Basillica of San Prospero with its one-of-a-kind frescos.

Moving on from Reggio, it is highly recommended that the coastline be fully explored. One of the most exemplary cities is Scilla, which is just a stone’s throw away from Reggio. Be sure to check out Ruffo Castle, and read up on your Greek mythology before going here – this is where sightings of Scylla were first reported, millennia ago. Also on the coast, the resort town of Cosenza with its superb holiday rentals and beachfront Calabira villas is a famous destination for bathers, and its white sandy beach is wide and long. Peer into the crystalline, aquamarine blue and breath in the intoxicating sea air. At night a castle awaits upon the hill, illuminated in pink.
