Minho is a Portuguese sub-region in the upper part of northern Portugal and belongs to the district of Viana do Castelo, on the border with Spain. Braga in the north of the country is the oldest city in Portugal. The county is divided into 23 municipalities. According to tradition, the diocese of Braga dates back to the 3rd Century, however, the historical confirmation goes back 400 AD, thus making it one of the oldest dioceses in the Iberian Peninsula.
It is a center of Christianization of "Gallaecia", as the area in northwestern Spain and northern Portugal was named. Around 138 BC, the Romans arrived into the country under the command of Decius Brutus. They founded the Roman city of "Bracara Oppidium Augusta" in the year 3 BC at the site of the present city of Braga, and made it the capital of the "Conventus Bracarensis " of the province Gallaecia.
After 711, the area fell to the Moors, but the Christians succeeded to reclaim it during the "Reconquista", with Braga becoming part of the "Porto county", from which later the kingdom of Portugal developed.
As evidence of this time you can visit the oldest cathedral in Portugal, the Cathedral "Sé", the old Bishop's Palace (now University of Minho ), the chapels "Capela de São Frutuoso Montélios" and "Capela de São Salvador Montélios" of the 7th Century, baroque gardens, towers, fountains, a city gate and richly decorated churches.
Interesting in the area of Braga is also a place of pilgrimage. Braga already belongs to the lush green, mountainous region of Minho with green excellent wines and great restaurants, not too far from the national park of Geres. In June Braga celebrates the city festival. The streets are colorfully decorated, parades take place and the people of the city feast on traditional grilled sardines.
