Our traditional Zrub (Slovak log house) was built in 1912 but has recently been renovated to include modern amenities, yet remain a National Treasure of Slovakia (equivalent to a UK 'listed building'). Spacious, it sleeps 6 (+2) in lovely natural surroundings facing the Belianske Tatry Mountains (which rise to 2,150 m). It is a romantic all-season hideaway cottage.
Zrub Zuzana lies at 930 meters above sea level and is situated in the Conservation Area for Folk Architecture of Antoovský Vrch, above the village of diar, Slovakia. The quiet location on open hillside allows walking direct from the front door. On the edge of Slovakia's High Tatras National Park, there is a wonderful away from it all feeling. It is a great place for wildlife, with deer even being seen occasionally at the house.
This cottage is only 35 kilometers or 30 minutes from Poprad and its airport.
The character of the traditional architecture and its tranquil location gives Zrub Zuzana an olde worlde charm, brought bang up-to-date with modern facilities for the discerning traveller. The fresh mountain air with alpine sun can produce a romantic hideaway or outdoor pursuits centre, as a couple or family group, at your pleasure. Ski, cycle, walk, fish, golf, relax in a mineral water spa or just sit and watch the endless variety of the view. Still a working village, you can glimpse traditional rural life, with horses being used to till the land, collect the potatoes and even take you on a sleigh-ride in the snow! It will be as relaxing a holiday as you want to make it, at any time of year.
diar is one of the gems of Slovakia. This unique village of some 1300 residents below the High Tatras is rich in traditions, folklore and culture. Particularly interesting is the well-preserved folk architecture with uniquely decorated windows and blue, red or white joints between the log beams, creating a strikingly colourful scene, rightly protected as a Conservation Area for Folk Architecture.
The surrounding area is rich in endangered species of flora and fauna, being part of the Tatras National Park (TANAP), UNESCO Tatras Biosphere Reserve, Goliáová Nature Reserve, Belianske Tatry National Nature Reserve and the NECONET national ecological network.
At around 896m above sea level, diar is 32 kilometers north of Poprad. It is situated in a valley surrounded by the Spiská Magura mountains to the north, Belianske Tatras to the South and West, leading towards the boundary with Poland (13 kilometers).
Summer or winter, there are many possibilities for sports or cultural entertainment. Throughout the year you can visit many natural or historic sites in the area, e.g.:
* Belianska jasky?a (Belianské caves) in Tatranská Kotlina (6 kilometers)
* Kemarok Castle (20 kilometers)
* Stráky Mansion (Spiská Belá - Stráky 25 kilometers)
* Spiska Sobota historic town square (Renaissance and Baroque) (Poprad 35 kilometers)
* The World Heritage site of Spiský Hrad (66 kilometers) - one of the largest ensembles of 13th and 14th century military, political and religious buildings in eastern Europe, and its Romanesque and Gothic architecture has remained remarkably intact.
The heritage site has recently been extended to include the historic town-centre of Levo?a founded in the 13th and 14th centuries within fortifications. Most of the site has been preserved and it includes the 14th century church of St James with its ten alters of the 15th and 16th centuries, a remarkable collection of polychrome works in the Late Gothic style, including an 18.6 metre high alterpiece by completed around 1510 by Master Paul.
In diar itself, there is the museum diarsky dom, a number of restaurants, bars, post office (with 24hr ATM) and the chance of trip to Poland, only 10 kilometers away.
The usual changeover day is Saturday, but this can be varied by prior arrangement.
