Berlin

Berlin

Berlin has a fascinating and complex history that continues evolving to this day, and the signs of which are evidenced in the immensity and grandness of both its old and modern attractions. From the monolithic columns of the Brandenburg Gate, to the futuristic glass towers and parachute-pavilion of the breathtaking Sony Center, Berlin provides a striking sense of a flat, apocalyptic landscape from which are surging the architectural Symbols of man’s expression of Greatness.

Upon tearing down the Berlin wall, the division between East and West Berlin was striking, and to this day the economies are hard at work reunited. Berlin is probably one of the most dramatic places in Germany for tourists to witness the vivid architectural juxtaposition between soviet bloc buildings on one side and a more Western European feel on the other side. Berlin’s Holocaust Museum is a grim reminder of Hitler’s legacy directly preceding the division of the city. Checkpoint Charlie is also fascinating monument of remembrance of the division Berlin faced.

Berlin’s nightlife reflects the worldly cultural sensibility of the locals, who cheer and holler in large crowds as Brazilian musicians dance the faro on stage, or African drummers entrance the crowds. When U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s declared that the whole world stood with Berlin, and that he, too, was a citizen of Berlin, he touched on the essence of the city, indeed, the entire nation of Germany – a place unified with the world by its intense curiosity, sensitivity and hunger for understanding. Of course, the precise words that he used – “Ich bin ein Berliner” – drew affectionate chuckling from the crowd because they literally meant, “I am a Jelly Donut.” Named after its home city, the Berliner is a tasty treat that can be found at bakeries throughout the city, you must try it.

Kreuzberg is a fascinating, increasingly Bohemian neighborhood with a strong nightlife and café culture. Kreuzberg is also a focal point of Turkish immigrants, which allows visitors to enjoy delectable Kebabs, Schwarmas and the honey-drenched thousand layer cakes. The bi-weekly Turkish street market by the river (come early) is a splendid affair featuring fresh fruit and vegetables, Turkish spices, treats and knick-knacks. From Kreuzberg, climb up into the Viktoriapark to find verdant, gently sloping hill, shady trees providing relief from the balmy summer sun, nude sunbathers and a superb view of the city.

A popular destination for both shoe-string backpackers and vacationers of the 5-star persuasion, Berlin is full of shoe-string youth hostels and luxury lodging options.
