Near the seaside resort of Sunny Beach, in Nesebar Museum Town, one of the oldest towns in Europe, the past comes alive. The Madara Horseman, carved into a plateau rising from a plane, resembles a petrified waterfall when observed from the east. Near the town of Kazanlak, in the Valley of Roses, a tomb was constructed for a wealthy Thracian ruler in the 4th century B.C. Another Tracian king’s tomb, the Sveshtari tomb, was built 2300 years ago close to the town of Razgrad. One of the two natural World Heritage Sites in Bulgaria is the Srebarna Lake - a fresh-water lake covering over 600 hectares that is home to a plethora of birdlife. The other site is Pirin National Park. Breathtakingly beautiful, but equally difficult to reach, these majestic and mysterious mountains have intrigued and puzzled man for hundreds of years.
